The Indaba Hotel Fourways that we all know, and love is a far cry from the original 14-bedroom Little Roseneath Hotel which opened its doors in 1952 to weary travelers and the Johannesburg elite. Now boasting 250 bedrooms, 24 conference rooms, 2 restaurants, a Gin Sensorium, a Wine Tasting Room and an award winning Arican Day Spa, this 17-hectare conference resort is still a “country hotel” at heart and is recognized as an “oasis” in the busy heart of Fourways, providing lodging, entertainment and sustainable employment to the community at large.
1952
The Indaba Hotel, originally called the "Little Roseneath Hotel," opened with a warm country house atmosphere. It featured 14-bedrooms, a small bar, and a restaurant which was renowned for its Sunday Lunches.
Located in the countryside, it was a popular day trip from Johannesburg with families enjoying the outing. It also attracted visitors from the local “mink and manure” belt who would arrive on horseback to enjoy the hospitality on offer.
Early 1970’s
Madame Stathakis, a vibrant and flamboyant lady, purchased the hotel in the 70’s and named it Mon Repos meaning ‘My Rest’, adding her Greek flair to the hospitality offering & soon becoming a landmark destination in Fourways. During this period, she added an A La Carte Restaurant to the hotel, now known as Ndaba Palace, and it became “the venue” for weddings and events. The Ndaba Palace has remained a venue of choice for discerning brides who are looking for an intimate, elegant wedding reception.
1975
Shortly thereafter, the hotel was sold to an American company who renamed the Hotel – The Fourways Garden Hotel, and soon after that the hotel and land were bought by Barclays Bank.
1980
As part of Barclays Holdings, the hotel underwent significant refurbishments, with the addition of 120 bedrooms and 22 conference rooms including a state-of-the-art Auditorium.
1990
The Injabulo function room and 88 additional bedrooms were built.
1995
The Epsom Terrace Restaurant was expanded, and the Siphuza Bar was remodeled.
2000 until Today
The Indaba Hotel was purchased by current owners (African Procurement Agencies) and with Rob Mickel and Fanie Botha at the helm, the hotel grew from strength to strength, soon becoming a landmark in Fourways and a conference destination of choice in the greater Johannesburg area.
Under their dynamic leadership, several improvements and additions were made over the years including the popular Chiefs Boma African Restaurant, the award winning Mowana Spa, a Gin Sensorium, a Tasting Room and the multi-purpose Kgotla Conference Venue which boasts 1000 square meters of conference & exhibition space and 2 well appointed boardrooms. They added 50 more bedrooms bringing the total of bedrooms to 250 including 2 luxury suites and 5 junior suites.
Ever-evolving, the Indaba Hotel is now a compelling blend of business-like convenience and efficiency, with a relaxed and warm country atmosphere; and features an impressive selection of conference venues and banqueting facilities making it the perfect destination for business & leisure travellers alike – your perfect “home away from home”
